Every season is unique in our region, which is one reason we love living here in Westchester County. Winter seems long, but it is also very beautiful. To me there is something serene about the icy Hudson and the sound of falling snow. But, even I will admit I’m ready for Spring as it brings bountiful flowers, crisp morning air and a scurry of activities – animals and humans alike. Around this time of year my family and I start looking for fun Things To Do in Westchester County so we can get outdoors and enjoy the scenery and the great weather.

Take a look at these fun upcoming Events, Outings and Things To Do in Westchester County this Spring 2015.

Tour Gardens of Historic Homes

If you are looking for gardening ideas or just like the beauty of nature, visit some of our local historic homes and gardens this Spring 2015.

The Gardens at Lyndhursts’ 67 acres are free to pedestrians accessing the grounds via the Old Croton Aqueduct State Park. Or if you visit the home, you can also tour the gardens.

Other homes and gardens to visit include Phillipsburg ManorSunnyside and Kykuit: The Rockefeller Estate.

Visit a Local Garden Center

With the arrival of Spring comes glorious window boxes, overflowing potted plants on front porches and bulbs popping up all over the place. It sure makes homes look better than they do in Winter! And it definitely inspires me to start gardening.

Hilltop Nursery in Croton-on-Hudson is a must stop if you are ready to plant your window boxes and spruce up your curb appeal. Rosedale Nurseries has a full retail nursery, sells garden supplies and offers landscaping services if you aren’t into DIY.

Take a Picnic to a Local Park

There are many scenic parks in Westchester County. The Hudson River Towns offer beautiful parks along the river such as Kingsland Park in Sleepy Hollow and Matthiessen Park in Irvington. Most parks offer playgrounds, picnic tables and barbecue pits. Riverside Concerts and movies are held here in the summer at Matthiessen Park. See more Things to do in Irvington and Sleepy Hollow.

In Irvington, you can also visit the O’Hara Nature Center, located on 26 acres of parkland known as the Westchester Preserve offering programs and activities geared towards environmental awareness.

Enjoy the Bounty of a Local Farmer’s Market

Visit the Irvington Farmer’s Market  every Wednesday from 3:30 -7:30 at the Main Street School parking lot.

The Hastings Farmers Market is a local favorite and is open weekly after May  in the Hastings Library parking lot off of Maple Avenue. They also offer a Winter Market December through May at the James Harmon Community Center on Main Street.

There are many other local Farmers Markets in Westchester County in Dobbs FerryNew RochellePleasantville, Larchmont, Tarrytown, Ossining, White PlainsChappaqua and others.

Hit the Trails

The Old Croton Aqueduct Trail traverses Westchester Villages and offers the ability to bike, ride or hike all the way to 42nd Street in Manhattan, a distance of 41 miles. Even if you are just enjoying a small portion of the trail, you are sure to see an abundance of wildlife and Spring flowers.

The Westchester Trailway system runs through the heart of Westchester for 22 miles passing by the Tarrytown Lakes. We enjoy walking our dogs along the trailway and the shores of the Lakes. We see hikers, bikers, strollers and many people enjoying the great outdoors here.

A Day Trip to the City

Many of us commute to the City for work. It’s very convenient from any Westchester Train Station. But when it’s part of the daily grind, we might miss all of the fun things Manhattan and the Bronx have to offer. Why not take the whole family on a train ride into the City one day this Spring and take a stroll around Central Park or have lunch at Tavern on the Green. Many museums have free events and family activities. Local residents can also pick up a Museum Pass at the Hastings-on-Hudson Library to enjoy many museums for free.
